I’d want it installed on a PC networked to my TV. Can a VPN be turned on and off? I have a Roku on an HDMI channel and would like the other channel for the VPN once in a while to watch a particular broadcaster from another country (I’m in the US).
Also, would it be tricky having Usenet software like Plex Media Server, Sonarr, etc., on the PC and watched through the Roku with the VPN off?
What you could consider is using a Google Chromecast. The Chromecast device is connected to your tv by the hdmi port, and for power you would need either a free usb port or just use the power cord provided.
From your computer, tablet or phone, you could ‘cast’ the stream to your tv. If you need the VPN, you simply would switch it on or off on the device doing the casting to the Chromecast.
I often cast shows/movies from my phone to my TV by connecting through my Roku. I have to turn the VPN off in order to that because the Roku won’t connect if it’s on. If you’re streaming what you want to watch and don’t want to lose your anonymity then you’ll probably have to download it with the VPN on then screencast it with the vpn off. That’s how I do it.
I’m no expert, but I’ve used quite a few different VPNs and I’ve never had any problem turning it on/off. So this shouldn’t be a problem as long as you can access whichever software you are using to log in to your VPN.
If you have a VPN router I guess this could be a little trickier, and if so I’m not sure you can turn it off unless you have it connected to a regular router aswell. If so, just unplug the VPN router and just use the regular router whenever you don’t want VPN access.
I turn mine on and off, so, Yes.
I hadn’t thought about that. Great idea. They’re pretty cheap too.
Many thanks!
Makes sense. Thanks a lot.
I’d want the VPN on my PC and not on the router so I should be OK. The bandwidth here is pretty low (12 Mbps) and I’ve heard the VPN can effect that. Thanks for the advice!
Thanks, now I just need to find the right one. There’re a bunch out there.
