Can Free Version of Proton VPN work with qBittorrent

I think I know the answer to this, but I would like to confirm with the experts here. I’m getting the firewall orange icon on the bottom of the qBittorrent application with the message “No direct connections.” I’m using the free version of Proton VPN. I have received a message from Proton that reads:

“Your connection has been automatically disabled because certain servers (such as free servers), don’t support P2P traffic. If you wish to use P2P applications with ProtonVPN, please upgrade to a paid plan. ProtonVPN paid plans have special servers for high performance P2P which are designated by the icon in ProtonVPN clients and dashboards.”

It would appear that Proton VPN is stopping qBittorrent. The application finds peers and starts downloads but immediately stops and shows “Stalled.”

Verdict? Do I have to buy the VPN service or is it possible there is another problem? The connection is not disabled all the time. In an hour’s time it might get disabled once for about 5 minutes, but qBittorrent keeps stalling even when connected.

Edit following several posted replies: The consensus is to pay for VPN service, which I have no problem doing. My concern was and still is that the download starts and then stalls, which seems to indicate another problem. Anyway, I’ll find out when I install a paid VPN service.

the 2nd paragraph of your post answers your question

Won’t work without paid one

You need to pay for the VPN service. I don’t get why people want to utilize a free VPN and then sometimes get in trouble for it…

The last time I received an actual physical letter from the ISP was around 5 years ago, stating I was downloading certain movies. I was using free VPNs found in the app store, lol. It is not worth it.

Please pay for the VPN service, and if you want my recommendation, I use Mullvad VPN and am going strong for 4 years with no issue. I highly recommend it.

I read what I posted. What I didn’t understand is why the VPN stayed connected the majority of the time, but QBittorrent still stalled out. There is a lot of conversation about connection trouble that is not centered on the VPN connection, and I wanted to be sure that wasn’t the problem before I spend money on a paid VPN service.

I never use port forward and it working fine on qBittorrent.

because the free tier does support regular traffic (browsing and YouTube and stuff like that), but doesn’t support p2p traffic, which is what torrents are.

I never did. I’m getting downloading speed up to 50mbps depending on how many are seeding. I see no reason for port forwarding.

I can seed as well. All that assumptions, and you never use Mullvad. Too bad for you.
