Bypass Household restriction on LG TV

If the a TV is forced to use the VPN at the remote location and you can see the that the IP of the TV identified as not being part of the household, this leads me to believe that the client’s VPN is leaking their real IP address, the TV is able to access Netflix without using the VPN, and/or the TV is defaulting to a different network for Internet access when the VPN is down.

When looking at whatsmyip on the client TV it does show the ip of the household. So in general that seems to work.

And - I don’t know if that changes things - the household error occurs already when starting Netflix, not after some time streaming. So the leaking would have to occur all the time.

If the appears when starting Netflix, the device must be able to access the internet without the VPN being active or is using a different network. Maybe there are 2 networks at the client location: network A (VPN enabled) and network B (VPN not enabled) and the device can use network B when A is not available?

Maybe use a different method to remotely access? I use Wireguard on opnsense at the main household. Never had a problem.

When I deactivate the vpn on the household end, the TV cannot reach the internet, so that should not be the case. I might have to do some monitoring if switching protocols and stuff doesn’t work. Sadly I will only get to this later next week.

Another related question, using the vpn service provided by the router is very convenient. However if that doesn’t work anymore I might need to switch. In that case, do I need extra hardware? Because I don’t think you can install a vpn client on a LG TV, can you? And I think my router is not capable of using anything else.

I just looked into the router interface, the router at the household is a little older and only has the ipsec protocol. So switching wouldn’t even work ^^
The clients router is newer, maybe can I can host a vpn server on an actual server at the household and have some vpn client on the clients router ^^

Edit:
Nevermind, using a vpn server on an actual server at the household and connecting to it from client using the router should work.
But I would be surprised if that works then but what do I know.

When you say deactivate VPN on the household end, are you referring to the location that has been designated as the main household in the Netflix account?

No, an LG TV cannot directly run a VPN or Tailscale.

If the only protocol is IPSEC, it probably doesn’t support all of the safeguards available to block internet access when the VPN goes down or disconnects.

Yes.

That might be the case.
I think the newer router supports some other protocols. So using another vpn server but the same client might work I guess

You can try Tailscale and use subnets for devices that cannot directly run the Tailscale app.

This would require additional hardware - subnet router - right?
But yeah, I will probably try that if all else fails

If you want to allow client access without a VPN, have the clients use an AppleTV.
