Brave browser in new private Tor window

Hi

I have a question I would like to use Brave browser in Tor private window, but not for deep or dark web usage but just for enhanced privacy. Could I replace my current vpn and just use this way ? sorry if it is a dumb question but if you do not ask, you do not get a answer

If you’re looking to use it INSTEAD of a VPN it’s worth noting Tor and VPNs work differently and only you can decide which fits your use case.

Tor isn’t great for using personal accounts (for anonymity’s sake) whether in brave, TBB, Tails or Whonix. Tor is Tor, regardless of flavor. It also isn’t great for streaming because of speed and bandwidth.

If you just wish to use it as an anonymous browsing alternative, by all means, that’s just what it’s there for. A VPN acts as an intermediary server between you and your desired location (i.e. Google.com, Netflix, etc.), and therefore can be more reliable for streaming and accessing personal accounts that can be linked to you (Since you’re already paying for a VPN/VPS it’s already linked to you)

ok that makes a lots of sense, well I live in a foreign country, and I am from EU and I use protonvpn and I like their features it works flawless with my netbanking. I do not have a google account I use Freetube not youtube. I do not have any streaming services like netflix just because they suck. So no worries there. There are things I do not care about they know and then there are general browsing researching and so on. I would like to keep private, I have 3 different browser Firefox and Brave and Orion. All though Nextdns with protonvpn its always on by default. And I just downloaded and installed Tor browser

Based on your browsing habits I’d say Tor would work similarly well for you. In the case that you want to use a VPN for banking for extra security but don’t want to pay, ProtonVPN DOES offer a free VPN service for 1 device with every account; although I can’t say I’ve had much luck working it out on a laptop, just a smartphone.

Tor + VPN is a good model for security (as long as the VPN isn’t linked to you, and doesn’t log but good luck verifying the logging)

I would still tend to err on the side of caution with letting your PII out onto the dark web. Should you ever need to improve your threat model you risk having to start over from stage 1 in some instances after dropping your guard is all.

If you aren’t worried about your VPN seeing you use Tor, they can only see what your ISP sees, so just that you’re using Tor, however you can get around this with a Proxy before Tor. i.e. User > VPN > Proxy > Tor

I more use Proton vpn and nextdns because I work currently in Mexico as a photo journalist. And no I do not trust the isp at all. so I take no chance and yes I also encrypted my computer beside external drives I also use the onion share and chat. plus I also use proton drive just in case
