The blurb about the vip add-on states: " Offers optimized speed and reduced latency for clients in Asia and gamers. VIP package allows prioritized traffic on all servers. Comes with Multi-hop VPN for increased anonymity. "
I’m hoping to be able to game while in China but not sure if this is worth it or a bait. Extra $10 per month ($120/yr) for 100 gb of vip servers.
UU is better for gaming
Astrill is a good VPN for general use.
UU as far as I know as a VPN that’s legal in China because its only possible to use it for games. The speeds are pretty decent. I comfortably played csgo on the asian servers with it on at around 25-30ping.
Astrill itself is the best and most reliable VPN. I’v used it for probably 7 or 8 years now, even in recent years when the price has increased 2x. I’v known people to use every other VPN you can think of claiming it’s the best and every single one of them at some point makes the switch to Astrill bc their VPN gets swept up in the next VPN crackdown.
With that said, Astrill isn’t perfect. It sucks on iphone, but works great on android, PC and ipad in my experience.
As for the VIP service, no idea. I’v never used it and never felt the need to use it because the normal Astrill service works good for me. Only caveat is that you sometimes need to switch servers bc it might start to slow down. If you only want it for gaming, just get UU. It’s 30 rmb a month and runs flawlessly with games.
Seems like a lot of people are using UU games booster. I will give it a try. I don’t need a VPN to game on Steam, but often do to connect to friend network or store. Also the speeds/ping when playing multiplayer games are crap unless the server is in China, and some of the games I want to use the servers in Europe or US so hoping UU will work for that. Will report back.
I’ve been using astrill since 2014. In the first 8 years I had never used the vip service, but in the last 2 years, i gave it a try. From my experience, I didn’t notice a big difference under normal circumstances except for online gaming perhaps. That said, I think it’s not worth 10 bucks per month for the vip service. You can use UU instead for online gaming under a much cheaper price as others said here.
I didn’t find it beneficial from a speed perspective. Agree servers were a bit more stable, but it just wasn’t worth it in my opinion. I have since gone to alternative methods.
Okay, thanks for the response. So I still need a VPN for basic web browsing/app usage, so I think I am getting Astril no matter what. But for gaming, I could look into this UU thing people are mentioning. You gave the price in RMB, so I’m wondering if I can get to China with my astril vpn set up and use that to get UU?
I just downloaded it. Finding it difficult because everything is in Chinese lol. If anyone has any tips on how to use this it’d be helpful. I really only care about playing league.
Yeah, they actually have an english version too but using the english version charges you in usd which is much more expensive because its not a simple conversion from cny to usd.
But you dont even need a vpn to download uu. You might need a chinese phone number to register, as well as your wechat pay or alipay setup to pay, but i cant remember. Anyway, you will get that stuff sorted once you get to china.
No idea, i switched to android about a year ago and havent had an issue with it since. Never had a macbook so cant comment on that but iv never heard any of my macbook friends complain about it.
