Anyone successfully using L2TP VPN?

My vpn had worked back in 2019, but sometime in the last year it stopped working on visible. I get download speed that is normal, but no upload speed.

Works fine on WiFi, or on a Google fi e-sim on my pixel 4, but doesn’t work on visible. Tech support has be tracking it for a month and recently said they are at a lots and are closing the ticket.

I’ve tried on a pixel 4, and my wife’s pixel 3xl.

I switched to Wireguard to work around it. CGNAT can’t see Wireguard because it mimicks HTTP packets.

Tech support said they have been tracking it? LMAO :rofl::laughing::laughing:

Chat back in. That agent was full of shit.
They don’t block vpns

VPNs have been speed capped for me for a week now, near 5 mbps. Either that, or my VPN client has suddenly added a speed cap

It is unlawful for them to block the applications and devices of your choice on the Verizon network: 47 CFR § 27.16 - Network access requirements for Block C in the 746-757 and 776-787 MHz bands. | Electronic Code of Federal Regulations (e-CFR) | US Law | LII / Legal Information Institute This statute specifically protects your use of lawful services like L2TP. This law is probably why /r/visible still ships unlocked phones.

If you have evidence of blocking your lawful traffic, I encourage you to submit a consumer FCC complaint about it. https://consumercomplaints.fcc.gov/hc/en-us

So what I notice is that on ANY other network, when I connect and then go to “whatsmyip” it says it’s the ip of the vpn server, as it should.

When I connect via visible, it gives me an ip in bedmimster nj (vzw), sometimes in ipv6 and sometimes in ipv6 format.

Not sure why…

Okay - hours and hours of dealing with Visible, only for them to say “we don’t support L2TP, try using open VPN”

So I’ve added Open VPN to my ubiquiti router. Bad news… Same problem. Only on Visible do I get zero upload speed. It connects. My download goes from roughly 45mb (no vpn) to 10mb (VPN), and my upload goes from 12mb to 0.00. Some services still work (facebook, facebook messenger, google hangouts messenger) but web browsing, speed tests, etc don’t work.

Thoughts?

On wifi - no problem. On Google Fi sim, no problem.

EDIT: Here’s the weird part - if I use my phone as a hotspot, via Visible, the computer (mac) can connect to the VPN and works just fine.

Just tried connecting to my home network over L2TP on cellular and it’s working normally.

I have to have my VPN protocol set to UDP not TCP for this reason

Amazing how far we have fallen… considering Verizon agreed to adhere to the letter and spirit of the law just 10 years ago…

They don’t block vpns

Not intentionally. But it wouldn’t surprise me if this was a bona fide bug due to the new tethering throttles.

Thanks, I shot you a PM… Maybe you can help

Well, Verizon doesn’t seem to have an issue with it. Visible really tried/trieds harder than Verizon to comply.

I suspect this is because of their CGNAT being different. I suspect it’s a bug, not intentional.

Unless it’s a company VPN you can just bypass with Wireguard, so geeks are less likely to raise a fuss. And good companies are deploying it too.

It’s certainly a bug, as my phone and its hotspot (tethered or not) works fine with VPNs. In areas with OpenDNS blocks I do have to use bridging with my VPN (Mullvad) but it still works.
