Anyone else find that you're always getting detected using a VPN? What am I paying for?

Not going to be bother listing all the countless times when trying to use Nord to bypass a site or service (you can use the search function to see other more specific requests)

But on a more macro level I’m kind of getting sick of getting called out for using a VPN. I’m paying good money I expect to be able to be not detected more.

This is getting a little ridiculous.

…and yes its still happening on double VPN, and obfuscated servers.

[edit] also finding it funny my post is being actively downvoted.

Sites are getting much more aggressive about blocking the IP addresses of all vpn servers, not just Nord’s. Nord has one of the largest, if not the largest, network of vpn severs of any provider out there. Nord is constantly adding new servers/ip addresses to hopefully get around this blacklisting. If you select the Nord vpn servers with the highest numbers, these are generally the most recently added ones which should give you the best chance of not getting blocked.

I’ve had Netflix detect the VPN once; switched servers and it was fixed. Most likely this was due to Netflix blacklisting the VPN IP.

I’m curious what other services you’ve encountered that make you aware you have been detected?

It’s not just Nord. Sites are just banning VPNs or making it harder to live if you use one (even Reddit does this). It is understandable because people might use VPNs to bypass restrictions, as the case with Netflix where certain content is only licensed for certain countries. So it makes sense, but it kind of sucks as a user. I couldn’t get Netflix to work recently on my computer, even though I’m in the US and was using a US server. Doesn’t seem like it should be an issue, but I guess Netflix can’t tell the difference.

it is a shared IP. If you want one for you buy a dedicated IP.

it is the same as if you use tor. when you connect to a nord server, you are using a nordvpn ip as your own, and sites see the ip, so they know you are using a vpn. there is not really a way around this as far as having a unique ip when using a vpn.

Í wish i had come to the reddit before subscribing for a year :frowning:

then get a VPN that isnt as famous as nordvpn.

TRUN OFF CYBERSEC (in the settings, at least when you want to access sites like Netflix, Hulu etc.)

The CyberSec setting which blocks “malicious sites” is likely what is giving you away. At least that is what I have found in my experience.

It’s not 100% clear exactly how the setting works, but if it works like similar settings do from other providers it is basically an added layer of AdBlock, blocking things like trackers. It is probably much more complicated than that and if anyone knows more about how it works I would love to know more. In my experience though whatever it does “gives away” the fact that you are on a VPN to places like Hulu and Netflix, even if you are using the obfuscated servers. In fact with it off I’ve been able to access both while connected to regular servers.

Actually it’s only happened to me once but I’m a very bad way, I probably came across a blacklisted address and got blocked out of pretty much everything and not much help from them but they did recover by itself. Well not exactly but it was reversible. By the way don’t expect Netflix to tell you that you’re using a proxy or VPN they will sometimes when it’s so obvious but most of the time you will just see your country or Netflix original Continent only and that point I suggest not to try anymore, I wrote a long post about this that my phone decided better be kept unpublished when it died. All right again I have some time and there’s quite a lot there. Lately however I’ve had serious issues because of Nord but because of the Firewalla gold, which is completely buggy Leaks and I am not using it anymore for VPN until they acknowledge issues which they seem to not be so interested in. Not to be accusatory and generic I will say that with firewalla router VPN you should not have any reboots plans or otherwise because he will get exposed, I never use the DNS turbo on any devices that may be connected because those are constantly leaking through cash and I have been making a big deal out of it. In fact they don’t have a real Killswitch at least not with Nord VPN do not aware of the disconnects and the only thing that protects you what is activated is force on DNS traffic through VPN and even then you mustn’t have a DNS configured for the interface you’re using because you will get routed back-and-forth twice and Count as a leak even though it doesn’t look like it. This is not a firewall discussion but with Nord in firewalla you should really be careful probably with others as well. And when you check for leaks make sure you don’t get more than one or two servers no matter where or what provider they belong to, but I will write specifically about this and I started to on the Firewalla website.

Not the OP but there’s an image hosting service I used to use to upload album cover art. One day they started blocking VPNs because they were IP banning users who uploaded copyrighted (or other illegal) images and those users started using VPNs to evade those bans. Today if you try to upload an image to that site while on a VPN, you get an error like “VPN users cannot upload images”.

That negates one of the purposes for using a VPN though: avoiding IP tracking.

I know this is a dumb question but could you give me more info on what a dedicated IP is and how to go about purchasing one?

I prepaid for 3 years.

And after saying “no” to their incessant “you need to upgrade” popups on my PC since my windows 10 cannot handle their required .net 4.8 framework, I accidentally uninstalled NordVPN. Now I literally cannot even install the program. Not even “old” versions (I can only find 2020 oldversions) will install.

I’m hosed because of their dumb updated program.

Turn off the CyberSec option when trying to access things like Netflix and Hulu. While in some cases yes you will run into blocked IP things more often than not I find that isn’t the case and just turning off the CyberSec option (it’s basically an AdBlock, blocking trackers) gave me access (and restarting the browser…)

For what? Your post? If I didn’t happen to know the back story, I’d be pissed like you.

yep (partially) but you cannot have both.

Nordvpn allows you to buy a dedicated ip that is a IP number where only you can use. This can help for some vpn uses but remember this does not help with privacy.
A dedicated ip can be usefull for browsing or streaming services not for P2P or if you want privacy. They have a page where they explain hXXps://nordvpn.com/features/dedicated-ip/

Oops, not OP.

Oh, I see. Well Nords you need to do a better job of churning out those new servers and ip addresses so we can out maneuver the Netflix’s of the world. But it’s ok, we forgive you. We know you’re doing the best you can.
