Android and WiFi Calling

If I use MullvadVPN on my Android phone, will ALL network traffic go through the VPN including WiFi calling?

Will this get around wifi calling with a provider that has geographic restrictions? So if I use an IP in the allowed country, it should work?

No, WiFi calling will likely not be tunneled

On iOS, wifi calling has its own VPN tunnel and I’ve had varying successes with using it in conjunction with VPNs. Some of the issue is that the added latency would sometimes cause wifi-calling to not activate when funnelled through a separate VPN.

Never had wifi calling on android, and not sure how the technology is run there though.

However, wifi calling and VOLTE are pretty much synonymous and this carier stuff usually falls outside of normal expectations with regard to mobile devices.

I would expect that it should be possible to funnel wifi-calling through a VPN, but that it would not be reliable. Also, be aware that different carriers have differenct rules for wifi-calling. Some american operators allow wificalling from anywhere in the world I believe, whereas this is definitely not possible where I live now.

odd that all apps go through the vpn but not wifi calling

So basically a solution would be to have your router connect to the vpn first.

Yeah, that’s exactly why I’m doing this. I have a carrier that wants to see that you’re connecting from a local IP to use WiFi calling. I plan to do exactly that since its one of the countries where Mullvad has a server.

you could run a home vpn to access the service anywhere, the latency would need to be low enough and you may have to pay attention blocking the phone location - maybe by putting it in airplane mode or changing the system location wifi-calling setting which gets reset each time you enable and disable wifi-calling.

Makes total sense. Thanks for the explanation. I guess I’ll find the smallest router I can that can use OpenVPN to connect to Mullvad and take it around the world with me and have the phone connect to it.

yeah, makes sense, thanks
