Allowed to use a VPN?

Am I able/allowed to use a VPN such as PIA while on the on campus internet?

Unless you’re actually trying to do something illegal I wouldn’t worry about it. Like someone else said you have to log in for the wifi so I’m not sure how much a VPN would help. But trust me they don’t care like at all about what you look at.

If you’re doing anything that would warrant you using a VPN, you shouldn’t do it on the University LAN.

In this thread: morons thinking their traffic and usage is 100% secure while on the University internet.

What do you need to use a VPN for? I wouldn’t recommend it because when you log in to the internet you have to provide your username and password along with the MAC address of the device. They’ll know what you’re doing. If it’s about not wanting the university to see you watching porn or something they really don’t care.

Idk about that. Some people just want privacy without any other motives.

Why is it always about porn with you people? What if they were looking for help with something that’s sensitive to them? Like looking up a few sites giving advice on how to come out of the closet to your family, or how to find help for the domestic abuse you’re dealing with, or treatment for an STD or other health issues, or need to find out what to do about a professor who’s sexually harassing you, or want to know the various ways to (legally) get your hands on an AR-15? There are plenty of reasons for people not wanting their internet usage information to be known.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some porn to go watch.

This is why I would use one, I use one at home all the time just for that reason. I just want to make sure I wouldn’t get in trouble if I used a VPN @ school because they would think I was trying to bypass them.

Again… If you’re concerned about privacy, you shouldn’t even be using the University LAN. I think a lot of people in general just don’t know what a VPN actually does in terms of obfuscating your network traffic. It is not going to stop the University from knowing what porn site you go to for example, they just won’t be able to see what kind of weird shit you’re into.

The University has direct access to your device’s MAC address, in addition to identifying your traffic based on your FDUID. There’s no such thing as privacy on the University LAN, and using measures to circumvent their security policies is a direct violation of the usage agreement.

I mean I just used porn because I feel like it’s just a popular thing to hide. But regardless, the university does not care if you’re trying to figure out how to come out of the closet.

VPN is just a way to tunnel network traffic. The information inside the tunnel is obfuscated but the endpoints are not. Please research before instigating an argument or giving incorrect information.

It doesn’t matter if you use a VPN, the University can still see that you are receiving or sending packets to known IP addresses of porn sites (for example). The packets themselves are encrypted through the VPN’s tunnel, but again… The originating point and end point are not obfuscated in any meaningful way. They will 100% know what websites you go to with only a slight amount of effort if they cared to investigate.

You connect to the VPN after accessing the University LAN, are you retarded or just trolling because at this point I can’t tell.

If you think your traffic on the FSU network is untraceable or unable to be monitored just because you’re using a VPN then you are a complete moron.
